on November 26, 2024        by Administrator

The Thai Network Information Center Foundation (THNIC) together with the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) and Thai Internet and Cloud Service Providers Association (TICPA), with support from ICANN, held a seminar on “DNSSEC and Cyber Security” and a workshop on “DNSSEC Hands-on Workshop” on November 21-22, 2024 at the Chulalongkorn University Alumni Association under Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King.

The opening ceremony was honored by senior executives from the three organizations, Dr. Pensri Arunwatanamongkol, Executive Director of the Thai Network Information Center Foundation; Ms. Morakot Kunthamyothin, President of the Thai Internet and Cloud Service Providers Association; and Asst. Prof. Dr. Waraporn Promwikorn, Assistant Secretary-General of the National Cyber Security Committee. Participants included IT representatives from various public and private agencies.

The seminar started with a principal topic, “The Role of DNSSEC in the Internet World”, by Mr. Chaya Limchitti, Advisor to the Thai Network Information Center Foundation, who spoke on the important role of DNS as the infrastructure of the Internet that enables connections to work correctly and efficiently, especially DNS security, which is important for preventing attacks and enhancing the security of the Internet system. DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) is another important tool for protecting DNS operation by verifying the accuracy of data and prevent data falsification. All administrators should therefore be aware of its importance and take necessary measures to enhance Internet security.

Next was a presentation on “Global DNSSEC Situation” by Mr. Champika Wijayatunga, Technical Engagement Senior Manager, APAC from ICANN, who discussed the importance of DNSSEC in preventing cyber-attacks, especially DNS Spoofing and Man-in-the-Middle Attacks, through the use of Public-Key Cryptography and Digital Signatures for data verification and tampering prevention. At the same time, DNSSEC helps the DNS system to be reliable through Chain of Trust, but there are still limitations such as no data encryption and complex settings. The deployment of DNSSEC still needs support from both the public and private sectors to increase the verification and usage in Thailand.

This was followed by a discussion on the topic of “Is DNSSEC Really Necessary?” led by Mr. Parkpoom Taipatana, Managing Director of Thai Name Server Co., Ltd., who presented key points on the necessity of using DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) in Thailand. Other expert speakers from various fields shared their points of view and provided important suggestions for the development and implementation of DNSSEC in the country.

The speakers were as follows:

  • Mr. Panupong Tanuthong, Acting Director of the Information Technology Office, National Cyber Security Agency
  • Mr. Paramin Chuangmanee, Manager of the Thailand Banking Sector Computer Emergency Response Team
  • Mr. Anupong Satapornphol, Manager of the Cloud and Big Data Business Division, National Telecom Public Company Limited
  • Mr. Piyaret Saelee, Senior Director, Internet Thailand Public Company Limited
  • Ms. Kanokorn Chawang, Director of the Telecommunications Regulatory Division, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission

This seminar was a good opportunity to provide the perspectives of experts in various fields who offered their opinions on the use of DNSSEC to protect data from cyber-attacks and the approaches that Thailand should urgently develop to enhance the security of the Internet network.

The seminar also presented interesting case studies from Public DNS providers such as Lt. Phuwich Chaiyakornroengdet, Director of Cyber Investigation and Forensics, National Cyber Security Agency, and Mr. Titipong Pak-Insri, Operation Support Manager, Thai Name Server Co., Ltd., who jointly shared their real experiences and practices on how to enhance the security of the DNS system so that seminar participants could learn and apply them effectively in their organizations.

The seminar ended when participants’ comments were collected by Pol. Col. Natthakrit Phromchan, Director of the Office of Critical Information Infrastructure Management, and the NCSA team to develop DNS security practices that lead to the creation of standards that support national usage.
