THNIC and NCSA Collaborate to Strengthen Thailand’s DNS Security and Promote Practical DNSSEC Adoption
The Thai Network Information Center Foundation (THNIC) and the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) jointly organized the “DNSSEC Workshop for Government Agencies, Regulators, and Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) Organizations” on 26–27 August 2026. The workshop aimed to strengthen the security of the Domain Name System (DNS), a critical component of Thailand’s Internet infrastructure.
As part of the event, Dr. Pensri Arunwatanamongkol, Executive Director of THNIC Foundation, joined a panel discussion titled “DNS and the Direction of Thailand’s Cybersecurity”, bringing together perspectives from regulators, Internet and mobile network service providers, and the financial sector. The discussion focused on approaches to strengthening DNS security and promoting broader adoption of DNSSEC in Thailand.
During the panel discussion, Dr. Pensri highlighted THNIC’s continued role in developing and promoting DNSSEC adoption. Thailand’s .th country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) was among the national domains to begin implementing DNSSEC in 2009. THNIC has also enabled DNSSEC Signing across all seven Second-Level Domain categories and developed guidelines and tools to make it easier for domain holders to implement DNSSEC.
These ongoing efforts to promote DNSSEC have contributed to a steady increase in the number of .th domain names with DNSSEC Signing enabled, from fewer than 1,000 domains to more than 6,000 domains. This growth reflects increasing awareness among organizations and agencies of the importance of maintaining the integrity and reliability of information transmitted through the DNS.
In addition, THNIC and NCSA jointly developed Checkdnssec.in.th, a tool that enables users, organizations, and system administrators to more easily check DNSSEC status. The tool can verify whether DNSSEC Validation is enabled on an Internet network and whether a domain name has been correctly signed with DNSSEC. This can help users and administrators more effectively analyze and distinguish DNS-related issues that may affect website accessibility.
Another key session at the workshop was a presentation titled “DNSSEC: Global Momentum and Thailand’s Progress — Technical, Policy, and Operational Perspectives” by Mr. Chaya Limchiti, an advisor to the THNIC Foundation. The presentation provided an overview of DNS and DNSSEC, beginning with the importance of DNS as a critical component of Internet infrastructure and the role of DNSSEC in verifying the authenticity and integrity of DNS information, helping reduce risks from threats such as the spoofing or modification of DNS data in transit.
The presentation also covered international trends in DNSSEC adoption as well as approaches and measures taken by various countries to strengthen DNS security. It also highlighted Thailand’s continued progress in DNSSEC adoption. The DNSSEC Validation rate in Thailand increased from approximately 7.63% in August 2025 to 57.75% in August 2026.
Mr. Chaya also provided practical guidance for system administrators and network service providers preparing to enable DNSSEC Validation. The recommended approach includes preparing DNS Resolver infrastructure, checking the readiness of equipment and networks, conducting tests in a simulated environment, preparing technical and helpdesk teams, and gradually deploying DNSSEC Validation in phases. This approach can help minimize potential impacts on users during implementation.
In the afternoon, participants further developed their knowledge through hands-on exercises. They practiced installing and configuring DNSSEC Validation on DNS Resolvers, as well as performing DNSSEC Signing on Authoritative Domain systems. The training also covered digital key management and DNS architecture design to support future security enhancements.
THNIC’s participation in the workshop reflects its continued role in supporting the development and advancement of Thailand’s Internet infrastructure, particularly by promoting greater awareness of DNSSEC and enabling organizations across different sectors to adopt and apply DNSSEC appropriately in their own environments.
THNIC will continue working with government agencies, digital infrastructure providers, and other relevant stakeholders to support stronger DNS security and contribute to a more secure, reliable, and trusted Internet ecosystem in Thailand.
